Events in the course of the project "Diversity in the Cultures of Physics".

On the 14th of June 2019 the Forum of Ideas for Equality Initiatives in Physics-Based Collaborative Research Centres and Graduate Schools took place in Berlin. The aim of the event was to present the lesson plans and the developed curriculum to an audience interested in integrating topics of gender and physics into the common teaching formats of graduate schools or in launching gender equality initiatives by integrating contents of the lesson plans.

The event on the lesson plans on gender knowledge in physics was designed for physicists and science administrators who are involved in coordinating graduate schools and/or gender equality measures for physics departments at universities and physics-based collaborative research centres. The lesson plans and the curriculum of the summer school series were made available to physics-based research networks. All participants were offered an opportunity to present their initiatives and gender equality measures that they had organised in their research centres, physics departments or the like. Moreover, the participants were invited to discuss new ideas and issues concerning gender equality.

In July 2019 the 13th annual "Science in Public" conference took place in Manchester. Organized by one of the partner institutions of the Strategic Partnership, The University of Manchester, the conference thematizing "the global and the local" provided an innovative, engaging, and creative interdisciplinary space to explore the intersection of science and publics. One of the sessions - called "Diversity in the cultures of physics: physics engagement in Europe" - was held by members of the Strategic Partnership:

"Our Erasmus+ partnership looked at the differences in how university researchers engage public audiences with physics in the UK, Germany and Spain, and compared these countries’ outreach initiatives specifically targeted at encouraging girls to study physics. We’ll showcase Germany’s “MINToring” girls’ work experience project and present observations on paired international visits where panellists shadowed another partner’s event: Berlin’s ‘Long Night of the Sciences’, where 70+ science institutions open their doors to the public, Manchester’s ‘ScienceX’ where typical science festival activities go to the Trafford Centre over a busy weekend, and Barcelona’s campus-based Festa de la Ciència family event."

One day later a second session, lasting 2,5 hours, took place. We presented the draft of the flyer “Making physics outreach more gender inclusive”. This flyer is designed to give useful tips to people engaged in physics outreach directed at young people; it shows how to make physics outreach more gender inclusive and discussed “Do’s and Don’ts” of inclusive outreach with the conference participants. The outcome of the session’s discussion and exchange was taken into account for the final version of the flyer.
