Hi, I am Nils and I started my PhD in September 2011 in the genetic biophysics lab of AG Schlesinger. I have done my bachelor studies in biochemistry at the University of Bielefeld. For my master studies I moved to Bayreuth and one year to Stockholm, where I worked on my master thesis in the research group of Pia Ädelroth.
My PhD project aims on structural investigations of the light gated ion channel, Channelrhodopsin-2. Therefore I am trying to design variants with reduced cysteine content in order to enable specific spin labeling on certain sites. Subsequent EPR measurements of spin labeled variants are performed in collaboration with AG Bittl. EPR measurements allow determining spin-spin distances with a high temporal resolution and can be used to obtain valuable data on the structural changes after light excitation.
