A study abroad experience or an Erasmus semester is one of the most memorable and rewarding parts of university life for many physics students. It offers the opportunity not only to experience a new academic environment and different teaching styles, but also to develop valuable intercultural skills. In addition, students often form lifelong friendships and build international networks that can benefit their future careers.
Plenty of Exchange Opportunities Available
Each year, up to 50 physics students at the Freie Universität Berlin have the opportunity to spend one or two semesters at one of our partner universities abroad. Applications are open to students of all nationalities.
We are happy to support you in planning and organizing your stay abroad and look forward to welcoming you back to Freie Universität Berlin with fresh academic inspiration — and perhaps even new friendships within the international physics community.
Application Procedure
Application
- Complete the online application form and save it as a PDF document.
- Prepare all required application documents.
- Submit the signed application form along with all mandatory documents by January 31 or by May 15 (for remaining places) to Dr. Cornelius Gahl. You may submit your application either as a complete PDF file via email (c.gahl@fu-berlin.de) or in paper form by mail to Dr. Cornelius Gahl.
Selection Interviews
The selection interviews take place in February. You will receive an email invitation with your scheduled appointment.
Decision
Applications are evaluated based on language proficiency, motivation for studying abroad at the chosen university, and academic performance. The Erasmus coordinator makes the final decision on the allocation of places. Applicants will be notified by email no later than the beginning of March.
Mandatory Application Documents
- Letter of motivation – outlining your study or research plans, your choice of partner universities, and your academic interests.
- Current certificate of enrollment
- Transcript of records of current studies
- Proof of foreign language proficiency according to the requirements of the partner university. It is possible to obtain a certificate for your language skills from the Language Center of the Freie Universität Berlin.
- Your list of preferences: As a rule, there are one or two exchange places available per partner university. Since some places are in particularly high demand, please indicate three universities in order of priority.
Application Deadlines
Winter Semester 2027/28 and Summer Semester 2028: January 31, 2027
Winter Semester 2028/29 and Summer Semester 2029: January 31, 2028
Additional Deadline
For remaining unfilled places for the summer semester, there is a second application period each year from May 1 to May 15.
Example: From May 1 to May 15, 2026, students may apply for remaining Erasmus+ places for the Summer Semester 2027.
Note on Timing
Please note that semester dates vary across countries and may differ from the German academic calendar. In some countries, the winter semester begins as early as September, and the summer semester may also start earlier, potentially overlapping with your examinations at the Department of Physics at Freie Universität Berlin.
