Realizing the Promise of Attosecond Science: All-Attosecond Spectroscopy
Abstract: Attosecond pulses generated through high-harmonic generation (HHG) have been instrumental in studying ultrafast dynamics on the shortest timescales over the past few decades. However, the HHG process is inherently inefficient, and XUV optical elements used in conventional beamlines further reduce pulse intensity through significant transmission losses. As a result, most attosecond spectroscopy experiments to date have relied on attosecond XUV pulses combined with near-infrared (NIR) fields, limiting temporal and spectral flexibility. This PhD work demonstrates the first HHG-based all-attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy experiments using a tabletop beamline that produces intense, near-isolated attosecond pulses at kilohertz repetition rates. Electronic coherences were observed in Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe, with Xe exhibiting quantum beatings corresponding to ion spin–orbit splitting with a period of 3.1 ± 0.1 fs. The work also introduces the first plasma-based lens for XUV attosecond pulses, providing >80% transmission and tunable XUV focusing while suppressing residual NIR radiation. These advances expand opportunities for all-attosecond spectroscopy and pave the way toward higher-throughput HHG beamlines.
