Directions to the Apartment Hotel Dahlem

From Tegel Airport

From the Airport, take the bus 109 to the U-bahn station Jacob-Kaiser-Platz (direction Zoologischer Garten). From here take the U-bahn line U7 to Fehrberliner Platz (direction Rudow) and change to the U-bahn line U3. This you take to Oskar-Helene-Heim (direction Krumme Lanke). On leaving the U-bahn station, turn left up Clayallee and the hotel is about 200m on the right.

The journey should take about 40 minutes.

From Schonefeld Airport

The easiest way to the hotel is by S-bahn. The S-bahn is caught from Schonefeld train station which is a 500m walk from the airport along a covered walkway. There are also shuttle-buses from the airport to the train station.

Once at the station, take the first available S-bahn: it will be either an S45 or an S9 (all S-bahns go towards the centre).

If you take an S45, get off at Heidelberger Platz (15 stops) and take the U-bahn line U3 to Oskar-Helene-Heim (direction Krumme Lanke). On leaving the U-bahn station, turn left and the hotel is about 200m on the right.

If you take an S9, get off at Baumschulenweg (6 stops) and take either the S45, S46 or S47 (direction Gesundbrunnen) to Heidelberger Platz (9 stops). Here change to the U-bahn line U3 and go to Oskar-Helene-Heim (direction Krumme Lanke). On leaving the U-bahn station, turn left up Clayallee and the hotel is about 200m on the right.

The journey should take about an hour. Note that the S45 does not run over the weekend, but the S9 and S47 do.

From Zoologischer Garten Train Station

Take the U-bahn line U2 one stop to Wittenberg Platz (direction Pankow) and change there to the U-bahn line U3 to Oskar-Helene-Heim (direction Krumme Lanke). On leaving the U-bahn station, turn left up Clayallee and the hotel is about 200m on the right.

The journey should take about half an hour

From Ostbahnhof Train Station

Travel to Zoologischer Garten and follow the directions given above. Most trains to Ostbahnhof also go to Zoologischer Garten and so it is easier to get off there. If this is not an option, you can take one of the many S-bahn trains to Zoologischer Garten.

The whole journey should take about 45 minutes

Transport in Berlin

The Basics

Public transport in Berlin is fast and efficient. It comprises an integrated system of S-bahns (overground trains that often go underground), U-bahns (underground trains that often go overground), buses and trams.

Tickets must be validated before you board a train, or validated once onboard a bus or tram. Tickets are regularly checked by plain-clothes operatives who like to make a game of blending in with the crowd as they board, only to jump out at you once the vehicle begins to move.

You can purchase tickets from the shops at stations, the automatic machines on platforms, the automatic machines inside trams or from bus drivers. Do not be afraid of the automatic machines. They have a choice of languages; accept paper money, coins and credit cards; give change and are easy to use via a touch sensitive screen.

You validate (stamp) your ticket by inserting it into a little yellow (or sometimes red) box that is inside buses and trams or usually next to the automatic ticket machines on platforms.

Which Ticket?

Berlin is divided into three travel zones. Most people will only need zones A and B. Arguably the only place of interest in zone C is Golm and the Max Planck Institute.

The three main tickets you are likely to need while visiting are,

Standard Trip in zones AB (2.10 euros)
This ticket is valid for two hours on the buses, trams, S-bahn and U-bahn trains, regional trains and regional express trains inside zones A and B. You may make as many stops or transfers as you like during the two-hour period of validity, but your ticket is not valid for return or round trips.
Short Trip (1.20 euros)
This is valid for a maximum of 3 S-Bahn or U-Bahn stations, or 6 bus or tram stops. You cannot interrupt your journey and transfers or return journeys are not permitted.
Day Card for zones AB (5.80 euros)
Day passes are valid from the time of validation until 3:00 AM the following day. You can use it on the buses, trams, S-bahn and U-bahn trains, regional trains and regional express trains inside zones A and B.
