International award honors outstanding contributions to understanding biological energy conversion.
For his outstanding contributions to research on biological energy conversion, Joachim Heberle is being awarded the prestigious Peter Mitchell Medal. The medal is among the highest international honors in the field of bioenergetics and membrane biophysics. It is presented at the European Bioenergetics Conference (EBEC) to scientists who have made fundamental contributions to our understanding of biological energy conversion – particularly processes such as proton transport, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, and membrane-bound proteins.

Renowned Biophysicist
Experimental biophysicist Joachim Heberle has set international benchmarks through his research on membrane proteins, proton transport, and light-driven biological processes. His work combines state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques with fundamental questions in molecular biology and biophysics. Particularly noteworthy are his contributions to understanding the function of rhodopsins and other energy-converting protein systems.
This research formed a central focus of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1078 Protonation and Dynamics in Proteins for which Joachim Heberle served as spokesperson from 2017 to 2024.
Ombudsman for Research Integrity
In addition to his scientific achievements, Professor Heberle has been deeply committed to promoting good scientific practice and research integrity for many years. As a member of the national body Ombudsman for Science (2014–2021), the Commission of the Austrian Agency for Research Integrity (ÖAWI), and in his role as the central ombudsperson of Freie Universität Berlin (2021–2026), he has advised, mediated, and investigated cases of scientific misconduct.
His approach is characterized less by sanctions than by mediation. The emphasis is on fair procedures and consensual solutions aimed at fostering a sustainable improvement of research culture.
Award Ceremony in Stockholm with Laudatory Speech by Nobel Laureate Hartmut Michel
The Peter Mitchell Medal 2026 will be presented during the European Bioenergetics Conference (EBEC 2026) on August 22 in the Aula Magna of Stockholm University. This year’s award also highlights the international significance of research in molecular biophysics.
At the award ceremony, Joachim Heberle will deliver the John Mitchell Memorial Lecture entitled Following the Proton: A Journey Through Bioenergetics. The laudatory speech for the 2026 recipient will be given by Professor Dr. Hartmut Michel, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics in Frankfurt.
