Pioneering Quantum Research
The Freie Universität Berlin has achieved outstanding success in the latest European QuantERA call for proposals, with three approved projects on quantum computers and quantum error correction.

Freie Universität Berlin is among the most successful German institutions in the current call of the European QuantERA network. Together with the University of Ulm, it has secured the highest number of approved quantum research projects in Germany, with three funded initiatives. Out of 287 research proposals submitted across Europe, the selection committee approved 39 projects. The selected research projects at Freie Universität Berlin will receive total funding of more than €860,000.
The funded projects are led by quantum physicists Prof. Dr. Christiane Koch and Prof. Dr. Jens Eisert, whose research plays a key role in strengthening Freie Universität Berlin’s leading position in the development of next-generation quantum technologies. Their projects address crucial technological challenges in the advancement of future quantum computers.
Christiane Koch’s projects focus on thermal and energy management in superconducting circuits as well as feedback-based quantum optimization and control. “Superconducting circuits are currently among the most advanced and promising architectures for quantum computers,” explains Christiane Koch. “Computational operations must be performed at temperatures of minus 273°C, just above absolute zero. However, carrying out these operations causes the quantum chips to heat up.” Solving the problem of how to dissipate this heat as efficiently as possible is a prerequisite for building larger quantum chips.
Jens Eisert leads the third approved project, which focuses on quantum error correction. Drawing on ideas at the interface of physics and mathematics, the project explores a new approach to making quantum technologies more resilient against their greatest threat: unwanted environmental influences that can destroy the advantages of quantum systems. Quantum error correction protects fragile quantum information from such disturbances and is considered essential for the further development of quantum computers.
The QuantERA network is Europe’s largest initiative for cooperation in quantum technologies, bringing together leading researchers across national borders. It is funded by the European Commission.
