The idea is to use CO2 captured at powerplants as a raw material. Energetically driven by electricity from sustainable sources, water is split (oxidized) and CO2 is transformed (reduced) yielding carbon-based, energy-rich chemicals (e.g. methane and ethylene), which may either serve as raw materials in chemical industry or as fuels. The CO2EKAT project on development of electrocatalysts for chemical energy storage starts at the end of 2015. The project is pursued in cooperation with the research groups of Christina Roth (FU Berlin), Peter Strasser (TU Berlin), and Beatriz Roldan Cuenya (Bochum). It is supported by the federal government of Germany.
