The research of our group is mainly focussed on resolving basic phenomena of single molecules. The properties of molecules on surfaces are of fundamental interest for future applications as electronic devices. Our aim is to characterize the structure, electronic energy levels and vibrational states of molecules adsorbed on different surfaces.
Our research method is scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy at low temperatures. With this tool we are able to spatially resolve molecular adsorbates on the atomic scale and detect their molecular orbitals and their vibrations. Our special attention lies on transport phenomena through single molecules. These determine their conductance properties but might also invoke switching events and bi-stabilities.
With the understanding of basic phenomena at the single molecule scale, we contribute to setting the requirements for future applications in molecular electronics.
We participate in the collaborative research program Sfb 658 “Molecular switches”.
