Nowadays, short-pulse laser systems are widely used in many research laboratories. To build such a laser system it is essential to understand the lasing principles as well as the experimental setup of a laser. In the class of solid state lasers, Nd:YAG is often used as active medium in the laser cavity. Students can learn how to set up a laser cavity, as well as generating both, continuous and pulsed laser; the latter one is realized with a Q-switch technique frequently used in laser amplifiers. In addition, the principles of second harmonic generation are demonstrated. This experimental training gives students the opportunity to understand fundamental aspects of laser technology.
