Physics Colloquium: Prof. Dr. Angela Wittmann "Exploring spin and chirality at unconventional hybrid interfaces"
Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz
Controlled manipulation of a system allows for systematic investigation of the underlying interactions and phenomena. Simultaneously, tunability also enables the development of novel materials systems and devices customized for specific applications.
Here, we focus on materials systems that conventionally have not been used as active components in spintronic devices, specifically, hybrid molecule-magnetic interfaces. Molecules offer a unique way of controlling and varying the structure at the interface making it possible to precisely tune the underlying interactions and hybridization at the interface by molecular design.
In this talk, we will explore tuning spin injection into molecules by molecular design and investigate the role of structural chirality on the hybrid interface. In the final part, we will focus on hybridization effects between the single-molecule magnets and metal surfaces with the ultimate goal of functionalizing their quantum character in a collective response.
About Prof. Angela Wittmann
Angela Wittmann is a Junior Professor in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Her research focuses on electron spin dynamics in unconventional material systems, particularly at the interfaces between molecules and magnetic thin films.
Angela obtained her Ph.D. in 2019 from the University of Cambridge, working on organic semiconductors under Prof. Sirringhaus. She then conducted research on antiferromagnetic films at MIT with Prof. Beach's group before starting her research group in Mainz in 2021.
Her current work explores spin phenomena and emergent properties at the molecular-magnetic interface, with potential applications in spintronics, quantum computing, and advanced materials.
