Winter term 2012/13

Wintersemester 2012-2013:

Lecture: Advanced statistical mechanics
  • Lecturer: Jens Eisert
  • Date and time: Mon 10:15-12:00, Wed 10:15-12:00
  • Room: 1.3.14 Lecture Theatre A

This course will be concerned with several aspects of phenomenological thermodynamics and statistical physics. After introducing the basics of both fields as well as the fundamentals of the common statistical ensembles both in a classical and in a quantum description, we will turn to more sophisticated topics on lattice models and irreversible dynamics.

Content of the lecture:

  • Introduction
  • Thermodynamics
  • Elements of classical statistical physics
  • Elements of quantum statistical physics
  • Lattice models
  • Non-equilibrium

Suggested reading:

  • G. Kluge and G. Neugebauer, Grundlagen der Thermodynamik (Springer)
  • K. Huang, Statistical mechanics (Wiley)
  • F. Schwabl, Statistical mechanics (Springer)
  • W. Nolting, Grundkurs theoretische Physik 6: Statistische Physik (Springer)

Tutorials:

  • Tutorials will be held on Wed 14:15-16:00 and 16:15-18:00.
  • The first tutorials will be on October 24.
  • Tutors will be Martin Kliesch, Christian Gogolin.
  • The problem sheets will be available here. We have decided to give out the first sheet on Tuesday 23 Oct only.
  • They will be distributed always on Tuesdays.
  • Each homework assignment will allow for earning 16-20 points.
  • It is necessary to have achieved 60 percent of all points in order to be allowed to participate in the exam.
  • It is possible to hand in the tutorials in pairs.

QQQ seminar
  • Organizer: Jens Eisert

This regular seminar is concerned with all aspects of quantum many-body theory, quantum information and quantum optics. All interested participants are more than welcome.
