BUA Certificate Program "Gender & Diversity in Science & Technology Studies"
The BUA Certificate Program (BUA CP) Gender & Diversity in Science & Technology Studies, which was designed and developed under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Petra Lucht, Head of the Department "Feminist Studies in Science, Technology und Society" at ZIFG at Technische Universität Berlin, together with Prof. Dr. Martina Erlemann, Freie Universität Berlin, started in the summer semester 2024.
The new BUA CP Gender & Diversity in Science & Technology Studies enables you as a student of the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) to acquire knowledge of inter- and transdisciplinary gender and diversity research with regard to the connections between science, technology and society on a global scale. The course content includes both fundamental and applied knowledge of gender and diversity research, historical and socio-cultural conditions for the constitution of configurations of gender and diversity, knowledge of the relevance of gender and diversity for social challenges as well as concepts of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity with regard to gender and diversity research.
Structure
The BUA Certificate Program Gender & Diversity in Science & Technology Studies is made up of courses from the FU Berlin and TU Berlin and is offered in two thematic orientations:
- Focus STEM: A.1 (15 LP) or A.2 (18 LP)
This thematic focus A of the BUA Certificate Program primarily aims to transfer concepts, theories and knowledge from gender and diversity research to STEM fields.
- Focus Humanities: B.1 (15 LP) or B.2 (18 LP)
This thematic focus B of the BUA Certificate Program is primarily aimed at opening up STEM topics for gender and diversity research.
Courses of study
The courses of study in the four thematic specializations are structured as follows:
- Introductory phase: One module in each introductory phase is compulsory. This is where basic gender and diversity skills are taught and science and technology research is introduced.
- In-depth phase: In the in-depth phase, students can choose in-depth topics on digitalization, sustainability, the link between science and society, current theoretical debates in gender and diversity research and/or interdisciplinary basic research on gender and diversity.
- Project phase: In the BUA Certificate Program A (Focus STEM), the acquired gender and diversity skills can be used in the project phase to expand your own study and, if applicable, your own qualification work to include gender and diversity dimensions. It is possible to integrate these into a study project or a qualification thesis and thus acquire skills in the area of transfer. In the BUA Certificate Program B (Focus Humanities), knowledge of gender and diversity research is acquired in consecutive modules, primarily in seminar-based teaching/learning formats.
