Preparatory Course to the Advanced Master Laboratory

Summer Semester 2024

This laboratory course addresses master students who did not have laboratory courses equivalent to the basic and intermediate laboratory courses, which are part of the bachelor studies at FU Berlin. As its title already reflects, the course does not replace the Advanced Laboratory Course for Master Students, but rather gives the students the possibility to get used to the whole procedure of preparing, performing and evaluating scientific experiments as well as communicating their results.

The Preparatory Course to the Advanced Master Laboratory is considered in the Master’s study program as a module “Modern Methods in Experimental Physics A”. It comprises an introduction to data evaluation and 4 experiments of the intermediate lab. It is completed by an oral exam of 30 min.

The course starts with an introductory meeting and the instruction to lab and radiation safety which is mandatory for all participants of master lab courses.

Before starting with experiments, short introductions to data analysis and to basics of Python will be given.

In groups of 2 or 3 persons, the students will perform 4 experiments, evaluate the data and write reports. The experiments will be scheduled for Wednesdays, 10am to 7pm, starting with a preparatory discussion. The students should contact the respective tutors of their experiments well in advance.

The experiments will be performed in presence in the laboratories at the physics building.

The dates for the introductions, the lab calendar as well as further resources for the material will be provided on whiteboard. So please check there regularly for updates.
