Preparatory Course to the Advanced Master Laboratory

Summer Semester 2021

This laboratory course addresses master students who did not have laboratory courses equivalent to the basic and intermediate laboratory courses, which are part of the bachelor studies at FU Berlin. As its title already reflects, the course does not replace the Advanced Laboratory Course for Master Students, but rather gives the students the possibility to get used to the whole procedure of scientific experiments. Thereby the whole procedure of preparing, performing and evaluating the experiments as well as communicating their results closely follows the rules of the Advanced Laboratory Course for Master Students. The total workload however is strongly reduced due to the slightly less complex experimental techniques and the smaller number of experiments.

The Preparatory Course to the Advanced Master Laboratory is considered in the Master’s study program as a module “Modern Methods in Experimental Physics A”. It comprises an introduction to data evaluation and 3 experiments of the intermediate lab.It is completed by an oral exam of 30 min.

Instructions for Lab and Radiation Safety: Di, 20.04.2021 at 14:00 to 16:00 online via webex (link see Whiteboard) Participation is mandatory for taking a laboratory course!

The course starts with the instruction to lab and radiation safety and an introduction to data evaluation. These two parts are organized as online meetings together with the advanced master lab course.

The students perform experiments in groups of 2 or 3 persons.Three of the experiments will be performed in presence at the physics department. Introductory final discussions of the experiments however will be online. For one experiment, data sets are provided which the students evaluate on the basis on an extended online introduction to the experiment.
