Pathways in Physics: Dr. Marcel Goihl, Cem Yilmaz und Dr. Friederike Ernst - Physicists as Forerunners
Three physics alumni will share their journeys in physics and professional life. Everyone who would like to learn from their experiences or reconnect with our alumni is warmly invited. The event will conclude with an informal get-together with snacks and drinks.
Dr. Marcel Goihl – Theoretical Physicist and Project Manager for Green Energy
Marcel Goihl studied physics at Freie Universität Berlin and earned his doctorate in theoretical physics in Prof. Dr. Jens Eisert's group. Already during his studies, he was committed to sustainability and, after graduating, joined the climate protection organization atmosfair, where he advanced technical developments for solarbelt. This resulted in the world’s first production of CO₂-neutral kerosene for commercial use.
He has also provided impulses for sustainability in science: Scientific CO2nduct (publication in Communication Physics).
Today, Marcel Goihl works as Senior Project Manager for Technical Project Development at wpd, a company that develops and operates wind farms and solar projects worldwide.
For me, both engaging work and a good working atmosphere are equally important — along with the confidence that the two can be compatible for me as well. :)
My Advice to Future Physicists: For me, both engaging work and a good working atmosphere are equally important — along with the confidence that the two can be compatible for me as well.Cem Yilmaz – Teacher of Mathematics and Physics
Cem Yilmaz studied mathematics and physics at the Freie Universität Berlin. He soon discovered his passion for explaining complex topics in an understandable way—a perfect foundation for a career as a teacher.
Through the newly established Q-Master program, Cem Yilmaz qualified as a teacher of physics and mathematics. After many years teaching at a high school in Berlin, he returned to the university for 1.5 years to engage in research and teaching. Today, he is once again a high school teacher in Berlin, committed, hands-on, and full of passion.
My Advice to Future Physicists: Passion and enjoyment of the subject are crucial.Dr. Friederike Ernst – International Researcher and Founder
Friederike Ernst studied physics at Humboldt University and earned her PhD in the Reich’s group at Freie Universität Berlin (“Energy Transfer in Nanotube–Chromophore Complexes”). She then conducted research on low-dimensional quantum systems in the United States, at Columbia University and Stanford University.
During this time, she became swept up in the entrepreneurial and crypto wave. She returned to Berlin and founded Gnosis – a company that develops digital tools enabling people to manage their money, data, and decisions independently and securely.
Friederike Ernst will share her pathway as a physicist, international researcher, and entrepreneur.
My Advice to Future Physicists: Physics teaches you how to think, not what to think. It is a tool, not a destiny. Use it to create what truly matters to you – not what others believe is right.Time & Location

About "Pathways in Physics"
In the online talk series for students of physics, different speakers will talk about their own pathway in physics: why they became physicists, how they recognized what their interests in physics were and how they went about getting positions in research and industry. We invite speakers from the Department of Physics, different research institutions as well as from various industries.
