The National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) has honored the outstanding professional accomplishments of Prof. Dr. Marcus Kubsch with this year’s Early Career Research Award. With this recognition, NARST acknowledges Kubsch’s research on the use of artificial intelligence in science education and highlights the international significance of his studies. Professor Dr. Marcus Kubsch accepted the award during a ceremony at the NARST Annual Conference on March 24, 2025, in Washington, USA.

Since 2023, Dr. Marcus Kubsch has held a junior professorship in physics education at Freie Universität Berlin. As a pioneer in the field of Learning Progression Analytics (LPA), Dr. Kubsch leverages digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) to model student learning trajectories. His research goes beyond general statistical averages to ensure personalized, adaptive learning experiences that better support individual student growth. His contributions to designing digital learning environments and integrating AI-driven insights have major implications for the future of science education.

Additionally, Dr. Kubsch explores how students comprehend and engage with uncertainty ‒ an essential skill in scientific reasoning. Collaborating with experts, he has developed innovative tools that help students navigate and interpret uncertainty in scientific investigations. His work also addresses the ethical and effective use of AI and related innovative methods in education research, further shaping the field.

Prof. Dr. Marcus Kubsch is the first German scientist to receive this NARST award. “This is a great honor for me!
