Accounts
You need a FUB-IT account to log into the machines at the department. Once you have your account it needs to be whitelisted for usage at the physics department. This happens automatically for students, for new employees we need a note from your group (the group leader, IT coordinator or secretary).
FUB-IT accounts have different types: student accounts, employee accounts, and guest accounts.
Especially for PhD students it is common to have a student account as well as an employee account, since you need a student account to reregister each semester and you get one automatically as a (PhD) student and have it as long as you are a (PhD) student and you automatically receive an employee for the duration of your employment.
We recommend using only one of these accounts primarily, especially for saving data, since during transition periods accounts may be in danger of being deleted. For student accounts this can be the case when after finishing a Masters degree, the person starts employment for a PhD, but the registration with the PhD programme takes longer. For employee accounts this can be the case when a temporary employment ends, but the PhD has not been finished yet.
In these cases FUB-IT can convert accounts from one type to another. If necessary, this can be done multiple times, but per person only one account of a given type can exist at a time and the other of a given type must be deleted.
PhD students, who have studied at FU and have used their student account for saving research data, we recommend to continue using their student account, so that the data doesn't need to be copied around.
PhD students, who have not studied at FU before, we recommend using their employee account as their primary account.
To convert an account from one type to another you have to open a ticket at service.fu-berlin.de. We do like to be CCed on such tickets.
