Pathways in Physics: Driving Forward Innovations in Business and Technology

Jun 18, 2025 | 04:00 PM s.t.

Three physics alumni will share their journeys in physics and professional life. Everyone who would like to learn from our alumni or reconnect with them is warmly invited.

The event will conclude with an informal get-together over snacks and drinks.

Dr. Philipp Giese – Business Section Director and Innovation Expert at EURONORM

After studying physics and earning his PhD at Freie Universität Berlin, Dr. Philipp Giese led various projects in the business sector – initially at a vacuum technology manufacturer and co-founded afterwards a media company focused on blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

Philipp Giese later joined EURONORM GmbH, where he rose to become Director of the Business Section "Digitalization and Innovation Management" and Program manager for several funding initiatives. Philipp Giese will talk about working at the intersection of business, politics, and science, and his fascination with artificial intelligence.

To calm down the inner physicist he invents calibration devices for ophthalmologic purposes.

My advice to future physicists: Stay curious! The analytical mindset of a physicist cultivates relentless curiosity, questioning assumptions, and thinking in models and will serve as your greatest asset in any career path you choose.

Sophia Lahs – Quantum Computing Expert at DB

Sophia Lahs began specializing in quantum physics during her bachelor's studies. She completed her master's thesis in the research group of Professor Dr. Jens Eisert. With her physics degree in hand, she went straight into a role as a quantum computing expert at DB Systel GmbH.

Sophia Lahs will explain how she uses her knowledge of quantum physics to optimize railway operations and processes at Deutsche Bahn.

My advice to future physicists: Keep an open mind on your own pathway and follow your intuition - let yourself be surprised where it takes you.

Dr. Marko Wietstruk – Project Manager at ASML

After earning his physics diploma at Freie Universität Berlin, Marko Wietstruk completed his doctorate at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (BESSY). He then held research positions at the Max Born Institute and at Freie Universität Berlin as a member of Prof. Weinelt's Group.

Subsequently, Marko Wietstruk worked as a project manager and developer at SPECS Surface Nano Analysis GmbH before joining his current employer, semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML, for a job as a project manager and later group lead.

He will share his experiences of moving from academia into industry.

My advice to future physicists: Take advantage of the opportunities that come your way and follow your interests – this creates chances for satisfaction in your professional life.

About Pathways in Physics

In the online talk series for students of physics, different speakers will talk about their own pathway in physics: why they became physicists, how they recognized what their interests in physics were and how they went about getting positions in research and industry. We invite speakers from the Department of Physics, different research institutions as well as from various industries.
