12 Years of Biophysical Research on Protons in Membrane Proteins – What Have We Learned? The Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1078 "Protonation Dynamics in Protein Function" concluded in December 2024 after twelve years of intensive research. The results of this work were presented and celebrated at a symposium in September 2024.

CRC 183 "Entangled States of Matter": DFG Funding Extended for Four Years
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has extended the funding for the transregional Collaborative Research Center 183 "Entangled States of Matter" for another four years. The funding for this research center, which has been active since 2016, is now entering its third and final funding period. Along with the Freie Universität Berlin, with Prof. Dr. Piet Brouwer as co-speaker, the University of Cologne and the Weizmann Institute of Science are also part of the consortium.

ERC Advanced Grant Awarded to Physicist Tobias Kampfrath for His Research into Orbitronics at Terahertz Frequencies
Tobias Kampfrath, professor at the Department of Physics, will receive 2.5 million euros in funding from the European Research Council (ERC) for a period of five years to support his research project “ORBITERA.” As part of this project, Kampfrath and a team of fellow experimental physicists will explore the fundamentals of novel concepts of magnetic data processing based on the orbital motion of electrons (“orbitronics”). To this end, they will develop new methods that rely on extremely short electromagnetic pulses in the terahertz frequency range. ERC Advanced Grants are awarded to well-established, prominent researchers who are looking to explore new fields of study.

New Study Program for the Summer Semester 2024: Certification Program "Gender & Diversity in Science & Technology Studies"
The program enables students from all disciplines in Berlin to acquire knowledge of gender and diversity research with regard to the global interconnections of science, technology, and society. Within the program, students can develop skills, such as recognizing inequalities in the scientific field or identifying discrimination through IT applications. The certification program was co-developed by Prof. Dr. Martina Erlemann from the Department of Physics at Freie Universität Berlin as part of the Berlin University Alliance and is open to all students of the BUA universities.

Jens Eisert's Research Group – Publications in Journals of the Nature and Science Group
The research group of Professor Jens Eisert has published six papers in the renowned scientific journals of the Nature and Science group in the last few weeks or is awaitung their publication. The studies, which were conducted with various international and German cooperation partners, deal with the topics of machine learning, measuring out quasi-local integrals of motion, the description of solid-state systems in non-equilibrium, machine learning, quantum error mitigation and quantum algorithms for combinatorial optimization.
